HENRY MANCINI
Che il suo fosse autentico talento, i genitori lo capirono fin dall’età di otto anni. Che dalle mani virtuose del piccolo Enrico Nicola sarebbero sgorgate le note di musiche destinate a rimanere nel tempo invece papà e mamma Mancini non lo avrebbero mai immaginato.
Eppure in quel piccolo ragazzo nato in America a Cleveland, Ohio il 16 aprile 1924 sarebbe davvero germogliata una sensibilità artistica destinata a valicare il tempo e lo spazio.
Henry si trasferì a West Aliquippia, in Pennsylvania nei primi anni della sua vita ed incontrò la musica all’età di otto anni.
Il padre, suonatore di flauto nato a Scanno, (paesino abruzzese che avrebbe nascosto tra le sue mura il partigiano Carlo Azeglio Ciampi durante i tragici mesi seguenti l’armistizio dell’8 settembre) lo iniziò ai rudimenti delle note e lo seguì nella crescita artistica, lasciando nel musicista una traccia affettiva difficilissima da sradicare. Egli stesso, nella sua biografia "Did they mention the music?" (scritta insieme a Gene Lees) pubblicata nel 1989 dalla Contemporany Books di New York, ricordò le peripezie del padre. "Mio padre si chiamava Quinto perché era nato in quell’ordine cronologico.
Da Scanno, si trasferì prima presso uno zio e poi, all’età di tredici anni decise di emigrare.
"Mi sono rotto il capo per molti anni per capire il perché di quella decisione e come fece a scendere dalle grandi montagne appenniniche giù a Roma e poi a Napoli per imbarcarsi per l’America e raggiungere prima Detroit e poi Boston e lavorare in una fabbrica di calzature, e tutto questo.... da solo, negli anni 1910-1911.
Oggi è davvero difficile capire come possano aver trovato la strada ragazzi adolescenti partiti dalla Russia, dall’Irlanda. Eppure loro ci riuscirono e mio padre si batté sempre per l’emancipazione culturale. Quando gli altri padri italiani di West Aliquippia premevano per inserire i loro figli nelle acciaierie lui si premurava di darmi lezioni di musica.
Imparò a parlare bene l’inglese grazie all’aiuto di mia madre, figlia di abruzzesi, ma sempre come autodidatta."
Orfano di madre in tenera età (uno zio di Henry morì a Steubenville, Ohio, città natale di Dean Martin) Enrico imparò ad amare la musica anche ascoltando le grandi bande nei cinema di Pittsburg; all’età di dodici anni la vocazione musicale dell’italoamericano maturò pienamente e il giovane Enrico entrò nel mondo del pianoforte: vi entrò così bene da passare dopo pochi anni all’arrangiamento musicale.
Nel 1942, conseguito il diploma delle scuole superiori, si iscrisse alla scuola musicale Julliand di New York e soltanto la chiamata alle armi lo distolse dalla sua passione. Tra il 1944 e il 1945 Mancini passò la sua vita militare in aereonautica e in fanteria e alla fine del secondo conflitto mondiale entrò nell’orchestra di Glenn Miller come arrangiatore pianista.
Nella stessa banda cantava Ginny O’Connor, destinata a diventare sua moglie nel 1947.
Henry e Ginny si sposarono a Hollywood e dopo poco si spostarono a Homy Hills, città che non avrebbero più lasciato.
La nascita di tre figli (Chris, Monica e Felice) completò il quadro affettivo del musicista ma quello professionale prese corpo nella sua forma definitiva soltanto nel 1952.
Fu quell’anno infatti che Mancini entrò stabilmente nel mondo del cinema. Assunto nel dipartimento di musica degli Universal International Studios l’italoamericano lavorò, nei successivi sei anni, a più di cento film, compreso "The Glenn Miller Story", pellicola per la quale ricevette la prima nomination agli Oscar.
La collaborazione artistica con la Universal lasciò il posto al lavoro televisivo. Mancini riportò grandi successi nella serie "Peter Gunn" ed esplose letteralmente a livello popolare con la serie della "Pantera Rosa".
Ancora oggi il motivetto che accompagna i famosi cartoons rimane uno degli hit più ripetuti da milioni di persone.
Accanto al successo popolare, il musicista collezionò ben 18 nominations all’Academy Awards, delle quali 4 si trasformarono in Oscar, e 20 Grammy Awards; a questi premi vanno aggiunti anche sette dischi d’oro, il Golden Globe dell’Associazione della stampa straniera di Hollywood e quattro dottorati d’onore.
Uomo dal volto poco noto (sono alquanto rare le sue fotografie pubbliche), Henry Mancini ha sempre preferito parlare la propria inconfondibile musica per lui.
Schivo e riservato, ritornò nel paese paterno nel 1955, e con le indicazioni dell’unica cugina italiana intraprese la pericolosa strada di montagna per rintracciare la casa di famiglia. Si fermò per poche ore e nonostante fosse già conosciuto a livello internazionale decise di non rivelare le sue origini e di godere in silenzio dei propri ricordi familiari.
Ritornò altre volte in Italia ma non nel paese di origine, soggiogato dai ricordi. Passò invece il resto della propria vita senza dare troppo peso alla propria popolarità e vivendo nella quiete della propria famiglia: lasciò parlare la sua musica e diede al grande pubblico musiche indimenticabili, una su tutte, quella "Moon River" (colonna sonora del film "Colazione da Tiffany") di struggente bellezza.
